The whole aspect of religion has become a farce nowadays. Since when did the mere name of God matter so much that we are killing others and creating such a lot of prejudice?

I think religion originated back in the days when we humans were not as "socially evolved" and they had to come up with something called religion to instill this social responsibility. More like "you have to do this, this and that good and not be bad else someone called God will judge you" on the lines of telling a 10 year old to drink up the milk before going to bed else the monster will come and get him/her.

but what has happened over centuries? People have become so abstracted from the core concept of religion and go merely by 2000-3000 year old books and names of Gods and kill each other. Now religious fundamentalists are becoming cohorts with extreme right/fascists elements to influence the masses. I think it is very sad.

Another interesting point ... there is a book that talks about the collusion between pope Eugenio Pacelli and Hitler during extermination of Jewish people, check it out if you have time. The book is titled "Hitler's Pope".
